Statement of Teaching
My pedagogical approach considers the process or concept I am explaining, as well as the location of each student in his or her creative evolution. By grounding students in a certain level of technical and theoretical knowledge, I aim to locate them at an informed point of departure from which they are free to investigate new modes and methods of creative problem-solving.
I believe that the demystification of processes and materials is key to students’ creative development; the fewer obstacles they have before them, the quicker they can learn to strategize and focus on the task at hand. In order to keep the classroom environment relevant and engaging, I work hard to constantly update my own body of creative and cultural knowledge, whether in terms of a new technology, or an awareness of an artist or other creator whose work might be instructive or inspiring.
My hope is to foster a classroom culture in which students can enter into challenging, yet supported/supportive situations, creating a space in which they can gain the confidence and technical skills necessary to realize their creative objectives. I teach my students to expect -- and accept -- unanticipated turns of event, and to interpret them not as mistakes, but as opportunities for re-thinking both process and outcome.
